The 40 yard container in Spartanburg
The 40 yard is a job-site container, and the largest size we offer. Eight-foot sides mean it is loaded by machine or by a crew throwing from height, and it usually wants a lot or a job site rather than a house driveway. Commercial and industrial construction, full-building renovations and demolitions, large office and retail cleanouts, apartment complex renovations, roofing on large structures, disaster recovery — that is where it lives. It holds about twelve pickup loads, and the tall sides cut down the number of swap-outs on a big job.
It is light, bulky debris that justifies the 40: packaging, pallets, framing, fixtures, furniture from a whole building. Concrete, brick and metal go in within the weight limit, but they fill the allowance long before the box looks full, so for heavy rubble we usually suggest a 10 yard or a split-load plan alongside it.
Construction, demolition and big commercial jobs
General contractors on multi-phase projects, developers on new builds and demolitions, property managers renovating multi-unit buildings, businesses clearing a facility — those are the regular 40 yard customers. Demolition in South Carolina comes with paperwork: SCDES wants a written demolition application at least ten working days before work starts, even if no asbestos was found, and a project removing 160 square feet, 260 linear feet or 35 cubic feet or more of regulated asbestos material is a full federal-standard project with its own rules. Asbestos never goes in a roll-off — a landfill takes it only with a 'permission for disposal' letter from SCDES's Bureau of Air Quality. We will ask what the building is before we quote.
Every load has to end up somewhere legal. Spartanburg County Code Sec. 66-3 makes licensed collectors take what they collect in the county to the county landfill — the Wellford Landfill Facility at 595 Little Mountain Rd, which runs a Class Two landfill for construction, demolition and land-clearing debris and a Class Three landfill for household trash, Monday to Saturday, 7:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. The Class Two side takes only the state's approved list: no liquids, nothing soaked in petroleum, solvents or pesticides, no fluorescent lamps and no TVs or computers. Loads on the road must be covered or kept six inches below the top of the walls (S.C. Code Sec. 56-5-4100(B)).
Access and placement for a 40 yard
The truck needs a clear run in — more room if it has to turn — a flat, stable surface and clear space overhead. On a job site we place it where the crews can work around it. A 40 in a public street needs permission first: a City of Spartanburg street, sidewalk, alley or parking space needs the City's Temporary Street Closure/Encroachment application (minimum $75, a $1 million liability certificate, a $10,000 bond and an approved traffic control plan); on a state road, S.C. Code Sec. 57-7-210 makes an obstruction unlawful and SCDOT handles encroachment permits for its right-of-way; Greer's code bans obstructions on its streets (Sec. 62-181); and Pacolet keeps bulk containers off its streets and sidewalks unless the Town designates a spot (Sec. 18-9(1)). Each town page says what that town's code asks for.
Suitability
Is the 40 yard the right size for you?
Rough working figures. Weight, not volume, is what usually decides.
Choose the 40 yard for
- Commercial and industrial construction
- Full-building renovations and demolitions
- Large office, retail and warehouse cleanouts
- Apartment and multi-unit renovations with a crew
- Storm cleanup and long projects on a swap schedule
Pick a different size for
- Residential driveways (it rarely fits and you will pay for unused space)
- Heavy-only loads — concrete, brick and dirt go in smaller boxes
- Jobs without machine or crew loading
- Asbestos, hazardous waste, tires, batteries, TVs and computers
Placing a 40 yard container on a Spartanburg-area property
It needs a flat, stable spot about 22 feet long and 8 feet wide on a lot or job site, a clear run for the truck (more room if it has to turn), and clear space overhead. On your own driveway or lot we found no City of Spartanburg or Spartanburg County rule requiring a permit for a roll-off; in a City street, sidewalk, alley or parking space you need the City's Temporary Street Closure/Encroachment application — a minimum $75 fee, a $1 million liability certificate, a $10,000 bond and an approved traffic control plan — and on a state road S.C. Code Sec. 57-7-210 makes an obstruction unlawful and SCDOT handles encroachment permits. Other towns have their own rules — Greer's development code keeps a temporary dumpster out of the front setback unless there is an active building permit, and Pacolet keeps bulk containers off its streets unless the Town designates a spot. Check your HOA too: covenants can cover containers in driveways. Boards go under the dumpster on request. Each town page covers its own code.

40 Yard Dumpster — questions we get asked
Will a 40 yard dumpster fit on a residential property?
Rarely. It needs a lot, a long drive or a job site. For houses, a 30, or a 20 with swaps, usually works better.
How do you load a 40 yard?
By machine or by crew. The sides are eight feet high, so hand loading from the ground is slow — plan for a skid steer or a ramp.
Can I put concrete in a 40 yard?
Within the weight limit, yes — but not as the main load. Five to six tons (about 10,000 to 12,000 pounds) is included and concrete hits that at a fraction of the volume. Put rubble in a 10 yard loaded level alongside the 40, or ask us for a split-load plan.
Do you offer long-term rates?
Yes. Long-term and multi-bin customers get discounted pricing, swap-out service and monthly invoicing — tell us the expected duration and we will quote the whole job.

40 yard dumpsters delivered across Spartanburg County and the Upstate
We run roll-off containers out of the Asheville Highway yard to every town below. Spartanburg and the closest towns are often same-day; the edges of the county are more often next-day. The county licenses private haulers, several towns require a business license, and some keep containers out of the street — each page says so plainly. If your town is not listed, call anyway.
