Why a cleanout needs its own dumpster

Hauling a cleanout to the curb a few bags at a time, or making trip after trip to the landfill, drains your weekends. The City of Spartanburg will take furniture and appliances set 3 feet from your cart, removing them within one to two business days — fine for one couch, slow for a house. Spartanburg County has no curbside service in its code; its collection centers are for county residents' household garbage, and the County says furniture goes to the Wellford Landfill. Chesnee says eviction and move-out trash "will not be picked up by the city." A roll-off in the driveway changes the rhythm: you work continuously, toss as you go, and we haul it away in a single pickup.

Match the size to the house

For a single room or a light declutter, a 10 or 15 yard is usually plenty; a typical garage cleanout fits a 10, and a garage combined with a basement or attic is a 15. For a whole-home cleanout, most Spartanburg homeowners land on a 20 yard, and a 30 yard when there is a lot to clear. Big estate or property cleanouts can call for a 40. Furniture is bulky and light, so volume usually decides a cleanout before weight does. The sizing guide has the full table.

Plan, sort and work room by room

Walk the house first and list the spaces you are tackling. Then run every item through three buckets — keep, donate, toss — before anything goes in the bin; having the container on site makes the toss decision fast, because there is no pile of "maybe" items building up in the yard. Finish one space before moving to the next, starting with the one that bothers you most, often the garage or basement.

  • Garage and basement: old tools, broken equipment, leftover building materials.
  • Kitchen: cabinets and cookware you no longer use — appliances go elsewhere (below).
  • Bedrooms and closets: furniture, mattresses, clothing, boxes of forgotten items.
  • Attic: stored boxes, holiday decorations, keepsakes to sort.
  • Yard: brush, old fencing, patio furniture — brush in its own load.

Time it to the job

The standard rental is 7 days, which covers most single-house cleanouts. Need longer? Call or text before the pickup date and we extend for a small daily fee, or swap a full box for an empty one. Finish early and we move pickup up, with no penalty. When the box is full, call or text and we schedule pickup as soon as possible, often within 24 hours. You do not need to be there, as long as the dumpster is accessible and the area is clear — useful when you are clearing a family member's home from out of town.

What cleanout junk can go in

Most household cleanout material is fine for a roll-off: furniture of every kind, mattresses and box springs, boxes and general junk, cardboard, old flooring and carpet, cabinets, and yard debris kept in its own load. Mattresses, box springs and furniture are all on the state's acceptable list for construction and demolition landfills. Load smart: break down bulky items, lay flat things such as old paneling and doors along the bottom, fill the gaps with smaller debris, spread the weight evenly, and keep the load level with the top rim so the container is safe to transport.

Set these aside — and where they go

A few things turn up in every cleanout that cannot go in the box. TVs, computers, monitors and printers are banned from South Carolina landfills; take them to the White Stone, Cooley Springs or Hobbysville centers or the Wellford Landfill. Fridges, freezers, washers and other appliances go to the Cowpens, Hobbysville, Enoree, Stone Station or Wellford centers, fridges emptied first. Paint goes to the paint exchange at any staffed County recycling center. Car batteries, used motor oil and antifreeze go to any County recycling center. Tires go to the Wellford Landfill — up to 5 per household free. Pesticides and household chemicals wait for the County's spring household hazardous waste event. The centers serve Spartanburg County residents only. The what-goes-in guide has the full list.

Driveways, HOAs and the street

We found no City of Spartanburg or Spartanburg County rule for a roll-off on your own driveway. If your home is in an HOA, though, its rules can limit how long a dumpster stays visible or where it sits, so check before delivery day — let us know about HOA rules or limited access and we will plan around them. In Greer, a temporary dumpster without a building permit is limited to one per dwelling unit and may not sit in the front setback.

The street is a different matter. On a City of Spartanburg street, sidewalk or parking space you need the City's Temporary Street Closure and/or Encroachment permit — a minimum fee of $75, a $1,000,000 liability certificate, a $10,000 surety bond and a traffic control plan — and lights at each end at night under City Code §30-158(b). On a state road, S.C. Code §57-7-210 bans obstructions in the right-of-way. For a cleanout, the driveway is almost always the answer. The permit guide has every town.

Delivery day — or let us do the lifting

All our containers are driveway-safe, and we put protective boards under the wheels on request — we recommend them on concrete, asphalt or pavers. Give us a clear spot, a straight run for the truck to back in, and a heads-up about low branches, wires or narrow gates. If you would rather not lift a thing, ask about our junk removal service, where our team does the loading. Call (864) 310-7644, 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, and ask about same-day delivery if the cleanout is already under way.

Frequently asked questions

What size dumpster do I need for a house cleanout?

For a full home cleanout, most people land on a 20 yard, or a 30 when there is a lot to clear. A single room or a garage usually needs a 10 or 15. Tell us what the home looks like and we will recommend the right size.

Can I throw away furniture and mattresses?

Yes. Furniture, mattresses and box springs are common cleanout items and are on the state's acceptable list for construction and demolition landfills. If you would rather not haul heavy pieces yourself, ask about our junk removal service.

What about electronics, appliances and paint?

Set them aside. TVs and computers are banned from SC landfills, appliances go to County centers for refrigerant recovery, and paint goes to the paint exchange at a staffed County recycling center. Ask us if you find something you are unsure about.

How long can I keep a cleanout dumpster?

The standard rental is 7 days. Extensions are a small daily fee — call or text before the pickup date — and there is no penalty for an early pickup.
